Air Preparation

The use of compressed air to power mechanical motion is highly efficient and is widely used in a variety of applications. Preparation and control of compressed air is essential to ensure the long life of mechanical equipment and to adapt to pressure and safety requirements that can vary dramatically from application to application. Air preparation systems are available in various materials, including stainless steel, and generally include the following components:

  • Air filters
  • Regulators
  • Lubrication Systems
  • Safety Valves

Compressed air is hot, wet, and dirty. Air filters clean contaminants from compressed air to insure proper, consistent operation and to reduce wear on mechanical parts.

Each pneumatic system has an optimal operating pressure and exceeding this pressure results in excessive wear and wastes compressed air. Regulators are designed to maintain a consistent prescribed outlet pressure regardless of the inlet pressure and also maintain a consistent pressure regardless of flow rate requirements. The precision needed to maintain the regulation and flow requirements determines the type and cost of regulators needed.

Introducing a lubricant, generally oil, into compressed air helps reduce friction and wear, thereby improving efficiency and increasing the life of components. Since lubricated compressed air generally washes out existing lubricants, it should always be used once introduced.

Compressed air is powerful, therefore it is imperative to incorporate safety mechanisms to avoid equipment damage and failure as well as to protect workers.

This is a critical component to OSHA and ANSI/PMMI safety regulations required lockout/tagout program. Click Photo for more information.
